I'm normally not a photography artist, but since I got my new Canon PowerShot I've discovered how much fun it can be. And I can MACRO! :D

The gigantic butterfly bush just outside my front door was begging to be photographed, so one pleasant day when the butterflies were a-plenty I grabbed my camera and ran out there.

I got dozens of shots of rather ordinary run-of-the-mill orange butterflies...but then this beauty showed up! He would not sit still at all so unfortunately I only got a few decent shots of him. This is the best one.

Taken with a Canon PowerShot SD1000. Don't use without permission, mmm'kay?

Butterflies are sure hard to take photos of (just like bees or other insects). Their constant movement and needing to get all close to them for the Macro shots is a toughy. ^.^ This photo is pretty good, and being able to get a decent focus on it is a bit of a feat. Seeing as it's a black butterfly it's not very interesting to the eye, however. I'd suggest brighter butterflies (though I do understand you don't always have a choice in the matter ^.^;). Getting some practice in a zoo or something with an area dedicated to butterflies, or a brighter background woudl help. Also, the flowers in the background are a tad burned out. This is a problem with white flowers, but you may be able to balance it more with some photograph program, or just taking the photo from several different angles. =)

Well unfortunately with this subject I don't have the luxury of taking my time and making sure all the elements are perfect before I snap the picture, nor can I move for a different angle. I appreciate that you want to give me crits for better photos, but with the butterflies I just had to point and click as fast as I could and hope some of the pictures came out :XD:

I could've adjusted some things with Photoshop, but I try not to do that with pictures.. I like them to stand on their own as I took them other than maybe some cropping.

^.^; I usually suggest photoshop, but I never use it myself (I think it's cheating, but unfortunately the best pictures turn out after you use it =/) I suggested the butterfly exhibit type areas because, even though it's just point and click, the more you do it the faster you recognize good angles and the better those quick shots turn out. ^.^; Sometimes I wind up running after butterflies for like 10 minutes if I find they're too pretty to let go.

I would love to visit a butterfly park, but unfortunately I don't think there are any in my little backwater town ^^; Perhaps I'll look some up and see if there are any I could feasibly get to. It sure would be fun taking pictures in one of those.
